What am I working on now?
I am currently writing a large series of symphonic works entitled From Sea to Shining Sea, which consists of musical depictions and stories from American's national parks as inspired my time as Artist-in-Residence (AIR). The series kicked off with Lassen Awakes, a work about Lassen Volcanic National Park, performed by the North State Symphony. The most recent addition was The Sacrifice of Prometheus, performed by Reno Philharmonic about my experience as AIR in Great Basin National Park. Coming up are Sylvan Desert and Sky-Tinted Water, about Joshua Tree and Voyageurs National Parks, respectively.

The Sacrifice of Prometheus was inspired by my time as the Artist-in-Residence at Great Basin National Park. The piece revolves around the story of the former oldest known, living, non-clonal tree in the world, a ~5,000 year old ancient bristlecone pine named Prometheus. The piece is scored for solo bass oboe (which represents the spirit of Prometheus), full orchestra, and electronics (which consist of musical renderings of biodata from the bristlecone pines themselves. It is the first piece in the US to be performed for solo bass oboe and full orchestra, and is the first piece for orchestra to feature musical renderings of biodata from plants.
Below is a digital recording as produced by software. The performance by the Reno Philharmonic, entitled "Beethoven's Emperor," can be viewed on demand here, until June 30, 2025. Lassen Awakes
Co-commissioned by the North State Symphony and Lassen Volcanic National Park
2 fl. (2d pic.), 2 ob. (2d E.H.), E-flat cl., bs. cl., 2 bsn. (2d Cbsn), - 4 hn, 2 tpt, 3 tbn, tba - tim., 3 percussion - hp, elec. - strings
Lassen Awakes was inspired by my time as the Artist-in-Residence at Lassen Volcanic National Park. It follows nameless protagonist through an introspective stroll through the forest, an unnerving encounter with hydrothermal features which create an unsettling juxposition between unfathomably powerful tectonic forces and the surrounding beautiful nature, a violent volcanic eruptive episode, and a reflection on life, destruction, and renewal.
