What am I working on now?
In 2022 I was named the Artist-in-Residence at Lassen Volcanic National Park, where I lived and worked for approximately a month. My project is to write a symphonic work that depicts scenes from the park. The piece is for orchestra along with electronics, which are comprised mainly of recordings I took of the parks various hydrothermal features (bubbling mudpots, hissing fumaroles, etc.). The piece begins as an introspective stroll through a tranquil forest, though soon thereafter the walk is made uneasy by the presence of the hydrothermal features, which provide a glimpse into the destructive potential of nature. A juxtaposition of beauty and tectonic power ensue, and is disrupted by an eruption of Lassen Peak, which triggers eruptions of the several other dozen volcanoes which reside in the park in a sort of apocalyptic fever dream. The piece ends with the acceptance of the inevitably of destruction and the signs of renewal.
The piece will be performed by the North State Symphony on May 13th in Redding, California and May 14th in Chico, California. Tickets can be purchased here: https://northstatesymphony.org/masterworks-4-rachmaninoff-dvorak/
My goal is for the this to be the first of a collection of symphonic tone poems that depict scenes from America's wonderful national parks, similar in a way to Gustav Holst's The Planets, except with national parks.
